In news from the courts, the attorney for Elijah Leasau has filed a motion with the High Court to have his client’s sentence amended.
Leasau was sentenced by the High Court last month to one year in prison for tampering with evidence. Upon handing down the sentence, the court said that Leasau was not eligible for parole.
The Attorney General’s Office is also recommending that Leasau’s sentence be reconsidered. According to arguments made, the statutes state that persons sentenced to more than six months in jail are eligible for parole.
Leasau was convicted of a Class A misdemeanor in the evidence tampering case.
Also from the courts, Petelo Filipo pled guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit felony stealing. He was originally charged with felony stealing, but through a plea agreement, the charge was reduced, and Petelo Filipo will testify for the government in the case against his co-conspirators.
Filipo’s charges stem from a case last year in which cases of beer went missing on the docks. Filipo was employed with one of the stevedoring companies at the time. By his guilty plea, Petelo Filipo admits that he and co-defendant James Salanoa conspired to steal the beer that went missing.
Sentencing for Filipo is scheduled for August. He could face up to five years in jail for the crime.
