The organizing committee of the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts is continuing its search for solutions to the problem of limited accommodations for visitors to the festival which is from July 22 to August 2nd.  Potential visitors who are now trying to come for the major regional event are finding that all hotels are fully booked for the two week period this summer.

The committee had explored the possibility of bringing in a cruise ship to serve as a floating hotel to meet the demand for accommodations, however, after reviewing e proposal from one cruise line, it was determined that when mobilization costs to get the ship here and other costs involved are factored in, it would cost more than $400 per day for a room on the ship.

“That’s more than double the average cost for a hotel room here, and unfortunately, it raises a question of who will be able to afford it,” said festival co-chairman Fagafaga Langkilde.

The organizing committee discussed the matter further yesterday, and are still exploring another proposal for a U.S. company to come in and construct temporary camp structures to meet the demand.  These are steel framed fabric buildings that are used mostly by the military and for post-disaster situations.  According to the committee, they look like huge tents from the outside, but inside, they are very mu like hotel rooms, with air conditioning and all the comforts.

“We’re fighting time at this point,” said Fagafaga.  They are also pushing the homestay program to offer visitors, where people’s homes can be put up for rent during the festival.  A list is being compiled of all available homes for this program, and inquiring visitors are being referred to them.  The committee is also contacting local churches with halls and other available buildings, to possibly house other visitors for a fee.
