The American Samoa Voyaging Society known as Aiga Tautai, is preparing a traditional Samoan welcome in Manua for the Cook Islands’ double hulled voyaging canoe which will be sailing here in July for the 10th Festival of Pacific arts.
According to the secretary of Aiga Tautai, Mick McCuddin, the arrival of the canoe from the Cook Islands has historic significance because the Rarotongan island group of which the crew is from is believed to be originally from Manua.
They are descendants of Karika, who according to Rarotongan folklore, was a chief from the island of Tau who sailed to the Cook Islands to escape a punishment of death for a crime against another chief in Tau.
Karika is said to have taken several family members with him and they settled on the island of Rarotonga.
After its arrival and traditional welcome in Tau Manua, the Rarotaongan ancient canoe will then sail to Tutuila for the Festival of Pacific Arts.
