Customs agents have confiscated nearly 400 cartons of cigarettes found during searches of fishing vessels arriving in port over the past few weeks.
Treasury officials suspect that the cigarettes were being smuggled in for sale to local stores. ASG Treasurer Gaea Pelefoti says some of the cigarette brands that were seized are not allowed entry into the territory because they are not properly labeled.
Gaea said he can understand it if only a few cartons of cigarettes were found for personal use of the shp’s crew, but when they find that many cartons of cigarettes on board, it is highly suspicious.
According to the ASG Treasurer, he has referred the matter over to the Attorney general’s office of whether charges should be filed against the fishing vessel owners for smuggling.
