Informative and entertaining. A live morning show featuring a line up of guests discussing current community issues. American Samoa's most popular morning talk show, watched worldwide online.
The American Samoa Chamber of Commerce held their third meeting with the organizing committee of the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts last night at the Tradewinds Hotel. At the meeting, the festival committee apprised members of the business community of the progress thus far, with the planning and preparations for the major regional event to be hosted in American Samoa in July and August of this year.
Some of the issues discussed included the plans to have the festival broadcasted via satellite throughout the pacific region.
Communications Committee Chairman Larry Sanitoa said that this will be the first time in the history of the festival that it will be broadcast live via satellite. 14 countries have already negotiated for rights to broadcast the satellite signal in their respective countries. According to Sanitoa, some pacific countries do not have the capability to downlink the video satellite signal.
The committee has retained the consulting services of Stockwell Limited out of Fiji organize the satellite broadcasts and negotiate broadcast rights with participating countries. Partnering with the committee in the satellite uplink are Television New Zealand and Maori TV. Local partners are the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority and KVZK TV, who have been selected as the Host Television Broadcaster for the festival. Also assisting with the local broadcasting of the events will be Malama TV, PCS TV and Pacific Island Cable. The Secretariat of the Pacific community media team will be assisting with the production of the satellite content.
Sanitoa told the gathering last night that the opening and closing ceremonies will be broadcast live via satellite, and the daily festival activities will be compiled into one hour highlights on each day of the festival. He said the satellite coverage will be the best exposure ever for the territory to the outside world.
Also discussed at the chamber meeting was the bad condition of the airport road. Director of Public Works Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei, who also chairs the festival’s Technical Committee, said that they are aware of the problem and are trying to address it.
Taeaotui explained that the airport road is scheduled to be reconstructed early next year, and it will include four lanes with sidewalks and gutter drainage. The problem facing the government is that the Federal Highway Administration will not fund a resurfacing effort of the road now, only to be dug up again next year for a complete reconstruction.
Nonetheless, ASG is trying to identify funding to have the road resurfaced for now, and after meeting with contractor McConnell Dowell, it is going to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $700,000. ASG is continuing to negotiate a lower price to do the job.
Another item of discussion at last night’s meeting was local transportation for the festival participants. The committee had counted on using 30 school buses from the Department of Education to transport participants between venues. However, with the present crunch being faced by DOE having half of the school bus fleet under repairs, the committee will be utilizing aiga buses to supplement the school bus fleet.
A suggestion was also made to ensure that local aiga buses will be running at night during the festival to handle the increase in population and the many festival events scheduled during the evening hours.
