The U.S. Medical Licensing Exam policy has required 24 of our local physicians  to seat a three-part exam in order to continue employment at LBJ Hospital.  The USMLE policy was implemented by the LBJ Board in 2006 in an effort to properly license our non U.S. certified doctors in accordance with administrative policies and rules.

According to LBJ CEO Patricia Tindall, the board gave the physicians two years to study and prepare for the exam, and so far all but one have signed up for seating, and two or three have already taken one part of the exam.  Tindall said the whole process may take about three months as the physicians must first apply to take the exam, and then wait for an opening.  She added that the exam is taken all around the world as physicians compete to be credentialed and recognized to work in the United States. According to Tindall, LBJ has offered to pay the airfare and per diem for each physician to take the exam in Hawaii, however they are allowed to choose another location if they please, as one has already signed up for the exam in Houston, Texas and another in Auckland, New Zealand.

In February, the LBJ Board passed a resolution stating that in order for physicians to maintain employment at LBJ, they must pass parts 1 and 2 of the USMLE by June 30, 2009.  Furthermore, physicians who fail to register and pay to take either part 1 or part 2 of the examination by Feb. 29. 2008 "will be still considered to have refused to comply with LBJ policy and shall be subject to action for insubordination, which may include termination of employment, after passage of the June 30, 2008 deadline."

A senate bill has been introduced in the House to grandfather-in the non U.S. certified doctors at the hospital.  The bill is pending as its provisions are still being reviewed.
