The Project Notification and Review System Board will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, July 2 at the Convention Center in Utulei for open discussion on the fiber-optic cable project, which is scheduled for launch in American Samoa in 2009.
According to the PNRS hearing notice, “The fiber optic cable runs between New Zealand and Hawaii coming roughly 100 miles from American Samoa and has fallen out of use but is expected to still be in good working order.” “The proposed action would cut the line and relay the cable to American Samoa so the Territory will be hooked up directly to Hawaii.” The cable will be connected to the Blue Sky site in Iliili, which according to the proposal will serve as the main distribution center.
PNRS encourages the public to partake in the public hearing, and notes that those who will not be able to attend may also submit written comments to the Department of Commerce on Tuesday, July 1 by 4p.m.. Furthermore, anyone interested in viewing the environmental assessment of the project proposal may do so at the Department of Commerce.
