The regional director of the Honolulu Passport Agency, Nancy K. Finn, is encouraging all travelers who plan to travel abroad in 2009 or 2010 to apply for passports now.  At present, the amount of time required to obtain a passport averages less than four weeks, however, passport agencies are expecting a great increase in processing time, noting that the U.S. Department of State predicts an estimated 21 million passports to be issued this year, and 30 million next year.

Finn advises those with family or friends living, studying or working abroad to make sure their U.S. passports are valid, and if they are not, to obtain one as soon as possible to avoid a long waiting period.   Finn said "With routine processing taking less than 4 weeks, now is the time to apply for your passports for summer vacation, family reunions and church conference travel."

Travelers are also reminded that some airlines and foreign countries do not accept passports with less than six months remaining before expiration.  Therefore, travelers  with valid U.S. passports are advised to make sure their current passport has at least six months validity remaining before their planned date of departure.

Also, passport cards are expected to be issued by the State Department this month.  The card may not be used for air travel, but is intended to help facilitate entry and expedite document processing at the U.S. land and sea ports of entry for travelers arriving from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean region and Bermuda.
