The heavy rains this past weekend had many Tafuna residents worried about their homes being flooded, as more than ten homes in the village were damaged by flooding two weeks ago. There have been no reports of flooding over the past weekend, but some Tafuna residents expressed dissatisfaction with the response they received when they took precautions by seeking help from the police, Public Works, and TEMCO.
In response to the complaints, acting deputy director for the local Homeland Security, Jacinta Brown, said that TEMCO has offered assistance by visiting homes and advising homeowners on how to prepare for future natural disasters. Brown said there seems to be some confusion among the public about TEMCO’s operation and its area of responsibility. She clarified that TEMCO is here to assist families in preparing for the future, but some have mistakenly sought them for financial assistance and help in cleaning up the damaged homes.
Brown said in situations like these, residents should contact Red Cross for financial assistance. She also encourages residents to voice their concerns with their village mayors as some villages could use water retaining walls and proper drainage to help prevent flooding.
