On his weekend radio program, Governor Togiola voiced strong opposition to Congressman Eni Faleomavaega’s bill which seeks to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act so that certain U.S. citizenship requirements may be waived for U.S. nationals living in American Samoa.

Togiola said that if anything, this bill will only benefit foreigners who move to American Samoa to obtain U.S. citizenship.  By opening the floodgate to more foreigners entering the territory for this purpose, the governor said he is concerned of the impact it will have on our local customs and land issues.  Furthermore, Togiola said this bill could open doors for provisions of the U.S. constitution and laws to apply to American Samoa.

According to Faleomavaega, his bill is intended to waive certain naturalization requirements for U.S. nationals living in American Samoa who wish to become U.S. citizens.”  He said that the passing of this bill will give U.S. nationals the option to apply for U.S. citizenship directly from American Samoa, instead of having to travel to the U.S..

Governor Togiola is urging the public to voice their opinions about the bill and to forward them to the governor’s office so that they may be forwarded to Washington DC.
