The Election Office is reminding all candidates and their campaign committees, as well as contributors, to make sure they abide by the local laws for election contributions. Deputy election officer, Filiva’a Mageo, said it is mandatory for candidates to file their financial reports with the Campaign Spending Commission, in accordance with local laws. Filing forms are available at the Election Office.
Congressional candidates are advised to visit the Federal Election Commission website, www.fec.gov, to obtain guidelines and information regarding campaign finance laws. All other candidates are reminded that the maximum contribution allowed from a corporation, partnership, joint venture, or any business or organization is $2,000. Individual donations are not to exceed $500.
Mageo said that by law no anonymous contributions may be made. However, this does not apply to amounts that aggregate less than $250 when obtained through multiple contributions made by ten or more persons at the same event. This provision of the law was put in place to address the small monetary donations made during a candidate’s siva Samoa. However, candidates and their committees are reminded to keep record of the aggregate contributions as they must provide the place and date of receipt, and the means and method of obtainment.
By law, receipts must be kept for every contribution received, and all funds must be deposited into a local financial institution. Each campaign committee is also required to keep an itemized record of all monetary contributions, the description and value of non-monetary contributions, as well as the name and address of each donor.
