Congressman Faleomavaega Eni is supporting South Pacific Express in their quest to receive the green light from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate inter-Samoa flights. SPEX recently submitted their application to the USDOT and is still awaiting their response. Faleomavega wrote to Transportation Secretary Mary Peters in hopes to expedite the process.
In the Congressman’s letter, he wrote, "At a time that fuel and other costs continue to increase and airlines are cutting back service to multiple destinations, it is essential that steps are expeditiously taken to allow South Pacific Express to initiate operations in the high demand travel period, especially given that the people of Samoa and American Samoa share the same culture and families and travel during the summer months to visit relatives, attend weddings, funerals and church conferences." Furthermore, "If South Pacific cannot initiate flights within a short period of time, large numbers of paasengers will not be able to travel between the two islands which will result in significant loss of leisure and business travelers, and have a dramatic impact on both economies."
Faleomavaega’s letter also notes that American Samoa will be hosting the 10th Pacific Arts Festival this summer, and this historical event will draw large travel groups and visitors from other Pacific Island nations, which is reason again that the expeditious approval of of SPEX’s inter-Samoa service is extremely important.
