The MV Sili has been dry docked at the marine railway for the past two weeks as it is undergoing repairs on the aft side of the boat which will be followed by an inspection before it can continue its routine services.  With the vessel temporarily out of service, Manua residents and store owners are complaining that store shelves are becoming empty, and basic food items have become unavailable as stores are running low on supplies. The residents are also concerned of the shortage of gasoline, noting that drivers are having to keep their cars parked and walk.

Port Administration deputy director Chris King said they did not expect the vessel would be dry docked this long and the remaining time required for the repair and inspection is unknown.

The vessel will be inspected by a representative of the American Bureau of Shipping who is currently on island to determine the required work needed to repair the MV Sili, which last sailed to Manua before Memorial Day.

Without the MV Sili, store owners and residents of Manu'a have to depend on air service to uplift goods from Tutuila. However, three Ta'u Island store owners day the freight costs are very high compared to the MV Sili.

One store owner said via telephone interview from Ta'u Island that stores shelves are empty with a lot of food items needed on a daily basis unavailable. She added the stores are staying open for only a short period of time.

The store owner says she is lucky that she has a lot of the basic supplies that were brought over last month before the MV Sili was dry docked.

Inter Island Airways says it is still getting a lot of cargo for Manu'a and  are able to uplift on flights to both Ta'u and Ofu islands.

Malama TV today asked the president of the senate and the speaker of the house to comment on the Manua shipping situation.
