Local teachers will be rallying this summer to address their needs as educators, and to discuss their goals and issues that need to be addressed by the government. Tafuna High School social studies teacher, Ben Te’o, is organizing the local teacher’s association, and says that now is an ideal time for the teachers to get together since school is out for the summer.
Te’o also led an organized peaceful march last year which called for the government to implement salary hikes for public school teachers. The effort did not go unnoticed, as Governor Togiola Tulafono signed into law the Teachers Reclassification bill on June 5, 2008. The bill provides that the salary hike of teachers be based on their qualifications and performance.
Te’o said the teacher’s association is just the beginning of a combined effort to ensure that our local educators receive all necessary benefits they deserve. He also said that their association is being supported by the national teacher’s association.
