American Samoa has taken a step towards the pursuit of alternative and renewable energy for our territory through a memorandum of understanding that was signed this past Tuesday.  The MOU was signed by the American Samoa Government, MD2 Energy Solutions LLC, and the University of Hawaii through Pacific Business Center Program director Papali’i Dr. Failautusi Avegalio.

The goal of the recently formed partnership is to reduce American Samoa’s dependency on carbon based fuels.  The MOU states a vision of “creating an island community that is alternative energy driven in its public and private facilities, operations and transportation that is sustainable.”

According to Dr. Avegalio, the role of PBCP in this initiative is to provide technical assistance and administrative support. He said they plan to work very closely with organizations both state and federal that have energy programs and are interested in supporting this kind of initiative.

MD2 Energy, according to Paul Ratterman, will help determine what path is best for American Samoa, be it alternative energy or renewable energy.  He said their “initial focus will be on utilizing wind, and down the road their studies could extend to include all forms of alternative energy, such as solar, geothermal and also clean ocean wave energy sources."
