Taxi rates will increase across the board by 50 cents on July 1, 2008 under the proposal of the commerce commission which regulates public transportation.  Taxi drivers have been pushing for the rate increase to help offset increased expenses mainly stemming from the escalation in gas prices.

Also effective July 1, drivers and passengers of taxis and buses are restricted from smoking in the commercial vehicles.  Taxi drivers will also be required to display their rates where passengers may easily see them.  A copy of the rate schedule should be available for review upon the passenger’s request.  Taxi rates are based on the distance of travel and are currently set for round trip fares.  The new rates will reflect fares for one way travel.  Passengers who are overcharged are advised by the commission to immediately file a complaint with the police or the commission itself.

Operators of commercial vehicles will also be required to display a photo ID where it is easily viewable by passengers.  This policy is scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2010, along with the ban of window tint on commercial vehicles.

Effective January 1, 2009, the standard color for all taxis shall be yellow.

In regards to the operation of buses, the commission will put into effect on January 1, 2011 a policy which allows that the only buses that may operate in the territory are those with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of three quarter tons or greater.

All operators of commercial vehicles are reminded that there is a $20 application fee to apply for a Certificate of Convenience or to have one renewed.
