Governor Togiola Tulafono and Lt. Governor Faoa Aitofele Sunia officially kicked off their reelection campaign this past Saturday at the Pago Pago Community Center.  Despite the heavy rain, the rally was packed in attendance with families, friends, and supporters of the incumbent team.  Also in attendance were Senate President Lolo Moliga and House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale.

During the governor’s main address, Togiola told the audience that he and Faoa are once again seeking their support in their run for the gubernatorial seat, and reminded them that it was because of their support that he and Faoa won the gubernatorial election four years ago.  The governor said since he and Faoa have been in office, they have completed many projects as promised during their campaign in 2004.  Among their accomplishments, Togiola noted the Teacher Reclassification Act which was signed into law so that public school teachers could have their salaries raised based on their qualifications.  Also, a new bachelor degree program for Samoan language was launched last week under a co-hort program with the National University of Samoa in an effort to preserve the Samoan language and culture.

Togiola said there is still much work that needs to be done, and his administration has plans in place to address these areas of concern, including problems with our roads, our schools, the hospital, and our government.  Togiola said some projects are still underway, but gave assurance of promising results, noting that Rome was not built in a day.

In Faoa’s brief address, the Lt. Governor received a round of applause from the audience when he said Togiola was the “true governor” needed as American Samoa is going through difficult times.

The incumbent team thanked their supporters for attending the kick-off, and said they would unveil more details of their plans in the upcoming weeks.
