The Department of Human Resources has completed its study on the impact of the wage increase on the American Samoa Government’s budget for the current fiscal year.  Based on the finding of no major impacts resulting from the wage hike, Governor Togiola said he will now lift the freeze that prevented any hiring, promotion, and increment within ASG.

The governor said on his weekend radio program that ASG will not be required to carry out a reclassification or change of job description for workers in the minimum wage level as well as those in the pay scale level.  He added that 117 ASG workers are effected under the new wage increase, which is set at a minimum rate of $3.91 per hour.   Togiola said also under the wage increase, 134 employees will now receive pay higher than the minimum wage level employees, noting that the hike moves minimum wage earners closer to the next pay level of employees.

Togiola said ASG’s current budget is enough to cover the rest of fiscal year 2008, and therefore the new wage increases will not require implementation of new taxes. He also noted that there would be less money for government operations as funds would be reallocated to cover the wage hikes.

Employees can expect to see an increase in their paychecks issued in first payroll of July.
