CRAG Establishes Strategy to Address Population Growth Threat

The population in American Samoa grew from less than 10,000 to 57,291 between 1900 and 2000, and based on these statistics from the Department of Commerce, American Samoa is apparently facing the major threat of overpopulation. Director of the Department of Commerce, Faleseu Eliu Paopao, said this problem must be addressed as its impacts will be inevitable to all residents of American Samoa.

Statistics show that Tutuila has only 30% of habitable land, and yet this island alone houses 96% of American Samoa’s population.  Recent statistics estimated our territory’s population at 65,029 and show that more than 40% live in the Tafuna Plain.  Based on the current growth rates, it has been estimated that in 5 years our population will increase by 7,000 people, 15,000 houses, and 2,000 cars.

The growth of our population is synonymous with the pressures put on our environment, as well as social and economic resources; known as Population Pressure, the Governor's Coral Reef Advisory Group has identified this as the main cause of many other key threats to American Samoa’s coral reefs,  including fisheries management, climate change and land based pollution. These threats pose significant negative impacts on our quality of life.

To address this issue, CRAG is working to develop a Local Action Strategy (LAS) which focuses on Population Pressure.  The LAS will help identify and implement plans of action to address key threats to our coral reef systems.

A territorial wide Summit on Population Growth will be held at the Convention Center in Utulei on September 24 and 25, 2008.
