ASBD Association: Bus Fare Hike Absurd

The American Samoa Bus Owners/Drivers Association is voicing opposition to the 25 cent bus fare hike scheduled to go into effect across the board.  Along with the 50 cent taxi fare hike scheduled for July 1, the increase in bus fares is intended to help offset the increased expenses drivers and owners of commercial vehicles are facing due to the increase in gas prices.

The Association’s president, Fanuatele Dr. Toafa Vaiagae wrote to chairman of the commerce commission, Faleseu Eliu Paopao, stating that the new bus fare hike is “absurd, unfair, inconsiderate and has no merit whatsoever.”  His letter also read that "uneducated person can comprehend the impact of the continuous skyrocketing cost of fuel, parts, insurance and different traffic fees the poor bus owners and drivers have to swallow on a daily operation while trying to serve the public through this type of business to make a living," putting into emphasis that the 25 cent increase is insufficient to offset the high cost of fuel nowadays.  Fanuatele also noted that many buses use diesel fuel which is now about $5 per gallon.

Fanuatele also addressed in his letter the issue of passengers who just walk away when asked to pay the extra cost under the new bus fare hike.  He explained that for this reason, it would be better to set a $2 fare across the board to eliminate confusion among passengers, and vouched that “it would be a lot easier to control and monitor.”

The bus association, according to Fanuatele, presented its own proposal to the commerce commission last November and it addressed the issue of high fuel costs, and also suggested what the proper fare would be for the different bus routes.  However, Fanuatele said the commission ignored their plea and did not give bus owners and drivers the sufficient time needed to voice their case.
