With the MV Sili still dry docked, Governor Togiola is looking into the chartering service of the Fotu O Samoa vessel, which is owned by the Samoa government. The vessel sailed last night to transport food supplies and fuel to Manu’a as residents have been complaining of a shortage in both necessities since the MV sili has been out of service.
The MV Sili has been dry docked for about three weeks and after passing inspection here it will sail to Honolulu to undergo more work and certification. Since the MV sili will probably not be back in the territory until late July, Togiola said on his weekend radio program that he is aware of the problems stemming from the lack of ocean transportation service and he is looking for solutions to address these problems.
The governor did not give official confirmation as to whether the Fotu O Samoa would once again charter to Manu’a on a regular basis, however he did hint that this could be a possibility. He noted that the vessel could possibly sail to Manu’a every two weeks if the MV Manu’atele III is not sufficient for ocean transportation to Manu’a.
