Malama TV has received numerous calls from local consumers displeased with the hike in the price of rice, among other food items. Some have noticed an apparent shortage of rice in the territory as some stores have already run out or have a low supply. To address the rise in food prices, Governor Togiola Tulafono has put together a three member Board of Investigation to look into the matter.
The Board of Investigation is chaired by the governor’s assistant legal counsel Marcellus Talaimalo Uiagalelei. The other two members are Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Augspurger and Punimata Nuuese of the governor’s office.
After their investigation, the Board is expected to prepare a report of their findings and conclusion, and to suggest legal action the government should take on local businesses or individuals that are price gouging and merchandise hoarding.
Togiola said "Any deleterious actions that threaten our food supply, whether natural or man made must be carefully assessed and mitigated in order to assure that the residents of the Territory have ready access to purchase important items, among which, are staple foods." The governor said he is concerned of the negative effects the shortage of rice may have on the availability of other staple foods produced locally. Furthermore, Togiola said effects may be even more devastating for the public through possible adjustments made by importers, wholesalers, and retailers.
The Board of Investigation has been offered help from the Chamber of Commerce, which among other things says they can provide information needed to conduct the probe, such as how prices are set by the private sector, and how the increase in prices are applied depending on various factors.
