Samoan recording artist Aziel Al Toeaina appeared in the Honolulu federal court yesterday to face drug charges, of which he pled guilty to. Toeaina, who is known as “AZ” in the music industry, was arrested in December when agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration seized $29,969 cash in three unwrapped packages of Hawaiian Host chocolates. The packages were in a shopping bag that was next to a bag that Toeaina admitted was his. According to court records, a drug-sniffing canine detected the presence of illegal narcotics on the cash that was seized.
Toeaina is charged with selling eight ounces of methamphetamine for $6,000 and accepting $9,000 as partial payment for more of the drug. He was initially scheduled for trial in September, but will now be sentenced on October 10 following a guilty plea made under an agreement with the federal government.
Because court records show that Toeaina has two 1998 state felony drug convictions, federal prosecutors are asking that the defendant receive a higher punishment.
Toeaina was also charged in 2003 for attempted murder of former University of Hawaii football player Tupu Alualu. He went to trial twice, but was acquitted of all charges.
