The Department of Health and LBJ Hospital are working hard to make sure they are prepared to accommodate the medical needs of the visitors who will be in American Samoa for the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts. LBJ Hospital is stocking up with extra medical supplies and staff members of DOH are undergoing training to familiarize themselves with the new mobile MASH units, which are basically tents conveniently power equipped to provide a functional field hospital.
Two mobile MASH units will be set up during the arts festival; the large tent equipped with eight beds will be situated in Utulei to accommodate participants of the daytime activities and the small tent which holds four bed units will be set up at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium to accommodate participants of the festival’s evening activities.
Jeremy Alford of tent supplier BASE X is training local medical staff on how to properly set-up, operate, and maintain the mobile medical facilities. The units will be staffed mainly by the DOH, but will also have backup from EMS and LBJ staff.
