Informative and entertaining. A live morning show featuring a line up of guests discussing current community issues. American Samoa's most popular morning talk show, watched worldwide online.
Invitations were sent out by gubernatorial candidates Utu Abe Malae and Nua Mailo Saoluaga to invite members of American Samoa’s private sector to a dinner that was held this past Friday at the Famous Restaurant in Nuuuli. The dinner had a good turnout, and it opened windows for discussion on how the government and the private sector can work together in the best interest of American Samoa.
Utu told the attendees he was interested in their ideas as he and Nua were open to suggestions on how to improve the partnership of government and business. As the dinner theme read “Is what you are doing..fair to all concerned?” Utu placed emphasis on the importance of fairness in running a government. He said “If the government has hidden agendas, then it is not a good government, it is not a democratic government. It would be like Nazi-Germany. Government is supposed to be open and it's supposed to be transparent and fair."
In addition, Utu stressed his belief in a “level playing field” for every local business. He voiced opposition to just a few benefitting by the status quo, and said the same rules and regulations should apply for everyone.
As Utu continued to share his thoughts and ideas with his guests, he received a loud round of applause when he addressed the living conditions of many local residents. He said he and his wife had personally visited many homes on their campaign trail and “it breaks [his] heart” having witnessed that so many of our people are living in squalor. He said our territory’s living conditions could classify us as a third world country, and this is not acceptable because we are supposed to be part of the United States of America, the greatest most powerful, richest country in the world. He said “The middle class is the backbone of any economy,” noting that these are the people who spend money and are involved in community service. He said that is what he and Nua aspire for the people of American Samoa.
Utu was also able to address many of the concerns that have long lingered among our people, including improvements in our education system, the roads, transportation, and telecommunications. He said that beyond the dinner, he and Nua will continue to unveil their ideas throughout their campaign.
