Sad news was received in the territory last week, as another Toa o Samoa was killed in action at the warfront in Iraq.

In remembrance and honor of U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Max A. Galeai, Acting Governor Faoa Sunia offered his condolences to Galeai’s family on behalf of Governor Togiola Tulafono and the people of American Samoa. Galeai was stationed in Hawaii at the Kaneohe Marine Corp Base as commanding officer for about 1,000 marines.  Faoa said Galeai’s death is not only a great loss to the Kaneohe base but to American Samoa as well, and that “his bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered as he willingly served America to protect the freedom of the world.”

The military did not confirm details as to how Galeai was killed on June 26, but there have been reports that a suicide bomber dressed in a police uniform detonated an explosive belt during a meeting of tribal sheiks opposed to al-Qaida in Iraq. The bomb reportedly killed Galeai and two other marines who were also stationed at the Kaneohe Marine Corp Base, as well as two Iraqi interpreters, the local mayor, and several key tribal figures.

A service was held this past Saturday at the Kaneohe Marine base in honor of the three marines, and Galeai was remembered as a role model who was proud of his Samoan heritage and cared about his family.

Galeai was 42 years old. He graduated from Marist Brothers High School in 1983. After graduating from Oregon State University, he joined the Marine Corps in 1988. He is the son of the late Tafaoa Pati and Kalala Galea'i of Leone, and a brother to seven siblings.  Galeai is also survived by his wife Evelyn Ho Ching Galea'i and their four children.
