Four lucky students of American Samoa will be heading to China on July 15 to participate in an art project led by world renowned artist Wyland, who was recently on island to paint a mural at the EOB in Utulei. An invitation was sent to Governor Togiola Tulafono last month to offer a rare opportunity for up to six local student artists who will assist Wyland in painting his 100th mural project.
The students that have been chosen to represent American Samoa are 16 year old Havasinia Mortenson, 15 year old Jennifer Kim, 13 year old Zachary Faulkner, and 10 year old Claire Painter. The winners were selected last Friday through an art competition hosted by the Governor’s Coral Reef Advisory Group.
The theme of the mural project is “Hands Across the Ocean,” befitting for the celebration of the world’s waters. It extends nearly two miles exhibiting more than 250 canvases representing the United Nations and Olympic member countries. The project is scheduled to be dedicated on July 21 and all participating artists will receive the Youth Ambassador for the Planet Medal of Honor.
Also while in Beijing, our four students will partake in education and outreach tours so that they may learn the culture and history of the host country. They will be chaperoned by two staff members from the Department of Commerce, and led by DOC director Faleseu Eliu Paopao.
Governor Togiola and First Lady Maryann have also been invited but there has been no confirmation as to whether the invitation has been accepted.
