The fiber cable optic project was reviewed last night during a public hearing hosted by the Project Notification and Review System Board. The hearingʼs main focus was to discuss the environmental impact the proposed project would have on American Samoa. Approximately ten members of the public were in attendance, along with members of the PNRS board and officials of the American Samoa Telecommunications Authority.
The five main steps of the fiber optic project were highlighted last night and provide that a first a marine survey will be conducted in August 2008. The next step will be the cutting, picking up, and laying of the cable. The third step is selection of a near shore route that least impacts the environment, which according to Chairman of the PRR Procurement Group, Fay Alailima-Rose is an area off Fogagogo that has little coral reef. The fourth step is the construction of a beach manhole and the final step will be to install the cable.
PacRim East Redeployment LLC is carrying out the project and the fiber optic cable is anticipated to be operational in March 2009.
