The Government Accountability Office has released its report covering funding from 1995 to 2007 for the United States and its territories. The GAO, which serves as the investigative arm of the U.S. Congress, submitted the report on Tuesday to leaders of the U.S. House Committee on Judiciary.
The report outlines allocation of the funds received from the U.S. Justice Departmentʼs Bureau of Justice Statistics under the National Criminal History Improvement Program, which aims to improve the nationʼs safety and security by enhancing the quality, completeness, and accessibility of criminal record information and by ensuring the nationwide implementation of criminal justice and non-criminal justice background check systems.
According to the report, American Samoa received $2.41 million between 1995 and 2005. For 2006 and 2007, American Samoa did not receive any funding, for reasons not provided in the report. The years 2000, 2001, and 2003 were the most lucrative for the territory with an incoming fund of $30,000 for each year.
The criminal record systems are expected to be updated soon with new technology as the old computer systems have reached the end of their life cycle.
