With the influx of visitors expected in our territory for the 10th Festival of Pacific Arts, the Department of Health has issued a warning of dengue fever risk as outbreaks of the serious viral disease are occurring in some Pacific islands including festival participants New Caledonia, Tonga, and Kiribati.
The Department of Health advises the public to follow the 3Dʼs of dengue fever prevention: DRAIN, DRESS, and DEET. As dengue fever is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito, it is important to DRAIN standing water around the house as this is the ideal breeding site for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. It is also wise to DRESS protectively with long sleeves, pants, socks, and shoes to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Another precautionary step is to use a mosquito repellant containing DEET.
All participating countries of the festival have been advised by the organizing committee to bring with them sufficient medical supplies and needs for individual special conditions in case of non-availability in American Samoa.
